Vintage Photo Ads

Chances are – if you’re like me – you eagerly awaited the monthly delivery of Modern Photography or Popular Photography to see what new photo gear was out. I can’t say how many of my purchases were based on the advertisements in those magazines, but no doubt that many were. Throughout my research into vintage photography, I have collected quite a few back-issues of those magazines and others. And man, those ads are a perfect window through which to view the world of Madison Avenue during the 20th Century.

It’s interesting to see how these ads evolved over time. In the earliest examples it’s clear that “truth in advertising” wasn’t a phrase anyone had heard. It’s also interesting to see how little of photography was marketed toward women until surprisingly late in the 20th Century (except for WWII years). So, in some ways it’s clear that the shape of advertising morphs to reflect the sensibilities of the times. Looking back at these has been a crash-course in the history of marketing.

So, take a stroll down memory lane. Through the links below, you’ll find over 1,200 high-resolution vintage ads relating to photography – from 1937 to 1990*. Click on the manufacturer to see their ads through the decades. I think you’ll find some real gems in there. Enjoy!
