Canon EOS Elan 7E / EOS 7 / EOS 30

EOS Elan 7 / EOS 7

Marketed as a true mid-tier model, the EOS Elan 7E (EOS 7 in Japan, EOS 30 in Europe) was a huge upgrade to the previous Elan version. Notably, it’s metering was based on a 35-zone evaluative pattern instead of the 6-zone of the former. Another improvement was that even though it offered eye-controlled focusing, it included a built-in diopter adjustment.

Autofocusing was accomplished by a wide, 7-point area which – in addition to being eye-controlled – could be navigated manually using the up/down/right/left buttons in the middle of the Control Dial on the camera back.

Additionally, the available BP-300 vertical grip finally added an auxiliary control dial and back buttons. Even though this had appeared years earlier on the EOS A2E / EOS 5’s available grip, the previous Elan II / EOS 55 grip only sported a shutter release.

The retro design using dials and levers for some of the functions – metering, AF mode, drive – were continued from the Elan II.
